Yes, I’m still training

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 9:23 am

Whew! Had to get all those pictures posted yesterday. But, Tuesday was another 4:15 am day for me. I woke up, stood up, said “I’m not running today”, got back in bed, closed my eyes, and then decided “Awww heck, I’ve got to go”. So, I got up, got ready, and walked out the door.

I nearly suffocated. The air was absolutely still. Not a leaf fluttered, not a bird sang, no crickets chirped. At 4:45 am, it was humid, hot and stifling. Oh joy. And it was a ‘Marathon Pace’ running day. I put the kids in the back seat with their pillows and blankets and headed down to the track.

When I arrived, I didn’t see the coaches, and I could see lightening flashing behind the clouds in the far-off distance. So, being 5 am, and not wanting to waste any time, I started my run. Sidenote: There are two training schedules. The first is a ‘finishers’ schedule, i.e. my goal is to finish the marathon. The second is a ‘time’ schedule, i.e. my goal is to finish the marathon in under this time. The coaches really don’t want first-timers to do the time schedule, and my true goal is to just finish, but I want to finish well, at or under 5 hours. Depending on which schedule you’re following, the workout is different. ‘Time’ schedule was the MP run, ‘finish’ schedule was 40-60 easy.

So, the ‘time’ schedule plan for the day was to do a 10 minute warm-up, 40 minutes marathon pace, 10 minute cooldown. So, I ran .75 miles for my warm-up in 8:40 (11:30 pace). Then, I stopped to stretch like Dr. Pain insists that I do. He even gave me specific stretches for the muscles he says are responsible for my knees. As I was finishing my stretching, I felt the first hint of a breeze.

After my stretches, I started on my marathon-pace run. I actually did my warm-up run too fast because for my time-goal of 5 hours, 11:30 is my marathon pace. So, I picked it up, and finished 1.25 miles in 13:20 (10:45) pace. And I was done. My hammies had been bothering me from the three hours of yardwork on Saturday (the weeds can have it!), and I was sore from the marathon pace run on Sunday too. I said, ‘that’s enough’ and slowed it down a bit.

As I continued to run, the wind picked up speed. Because of the layout of the track and the surrounding neighborhood, if the wind is coming from the north or the south, you are always running straight into the wind on one side of the track, and then as you turn, there is no wind on the other side. Yesterday the wind was coming from the north, and I was running head-into it on the backside of the loop. Ugh.

I ran another 17:35 (11:45 pace) for a total of 3.5 miles, 39:35, 11:20 avg pace. I was soaked from the humidity, my legs hurt, and the air was thick enough to eat. I was going home for a shower.

Then, during lunch, I went to see Dr. Pain. I told him about my hamstring issues, and he worked those for the first time. See, there’s a difference between ‘deep tissue massage’ and Active Release Therapy. In a massage, you’re laying there on a table, all relaxed, sure they put some pressure on your muscles, but not a lot. Dr. Pain stretches out your muscle and then applies the pressure, a lot of it. I nearly came off the table. Oh lordy, yes I did. Ratchet the pain rating up to about an 8.5 please, thank-you. Then, he worked my quads and my hip flexors. Quads didn’t hurt as much as before, but those damn hip flexors…holy moley. Yeah.

I’m feeling much better today though! Thank you Dr. Pain! Tomorrow: Hill training! YAY! Oh, and forecast for 6 am Thursday? Partly cloudy, 72F, 20% chance of precipitation, 87% humidity, winds from the ESE at 4 mph.

  1. Good for you for getting up and running anyways! I, on the other hand, shut my alarm off and went back to my beauty rest. I’ll eek in a run later tonight…..

  5. Humid, hot, and stifling at 5 a.m.??! Is there ever a time in Texas summer when it’s not humid, hot, and stifling?!

5 a.m. is perfect running weather here in Colorado, low 60’s and ~25% humidity…**blowing some dry air in your general direction**…

  8. “Humid, hot, and stifling at 5 a.m.??! Is there ever a time in Texas summer when it’s not humid, hot, and stifling?!”

Abby, there indeed is. We graduate into “oppressive” around mid-July.

And I think you’re just rubbing our noses in your great Colorado weather. lol

  10. I am so impressed. I’m not sure I’d get out of bed at 4:15 if my house was on fire. You go, girl!
