Marathon Pace Run

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 7:07 am

Haven’t done any form of exercise since my race on Saturday. Had marathon training today. Was supposed to do 10/30/10 with the 10’s being warm-up/cool-down and the 30 being marathon pace. Summary of today:

11:00 warm-up (I think…watch stopped) 1 mile

29:11 marathon pace 2.75 miles; 10:35 mile

5 minute cool-down walked/trotted 1.5 laps at the track

It was another muggy Texas morning. Gotta love it!

Happy Tuesday everyone! 🙂

So much is going on!

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 6:00 am

Race photos are being developed. I woke up with shoulders being a little sore. Mentally plotting my race report, but so much will come from the photos. Other than the sore shoulders, nothing else hurts! Not even today. Expecting a little more soreness on the 2nd day, but so far, nothing. Does that mean I’m getting in shape? Is that what that’s like…

Just me relaxing between the rappel and the climb.

Yesterday was a fantastic day. Had Date Four, which was, again, most excellent. I highly recommend ‘March of the Penguins’ if it’s at a theater near you. A very sweet film, suitable for all ages, and a great ‘Date Movie’ to boot.

I start the new job today! It’s a ‘business dress’ environment, which is fine with me, ’cause I clean up nice. Got my suit all picked out and ready to go. Coffee is made and I’m about to jump in the shower to get goin’. Take care ya’ll. I’ll be catching up on all my blog reading as soon as possible, so don’t think I’ve forgotten about you!

I’m Home!

Yep! Early even. We finished the race in just over 12 hours…not because we were faster than we thought, but because the RD had a cut-off and all of the points were ‘On Trail’. Race details to follow. I’m EXHAUSTED. Get to sleep in my own bed tonight though!

Mineral Wells Adventure Race

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 8:23 am

Last night I ran my first ‘double’ workout. Yes, ran in the AM and the PM. Another WOW. 🙂 My friends and I are doing a weight-loss/body-fat loss competition. Two different ‘pots’. Oh, yeah, there’s money riding on this! I did the weigh-in last night (aaack!) and next week I have to go to this place where they put me in a pod, zap me with some electrodes, and then I get my body-fat measurement (another aaack to be sure). Oh, and I have to pay them to do that. So, after we weighed in, we ran. Well, some of the girls walked. Then they turned back. Then we ran. Got in 2.75 miles total running. Forgot my watch though so I have no idea how long it took.

Today is a busy day! Gotta pack and get ready for my Mineral Wells race. I’m super excited! It might actually rain all weekend! That’ll help for keeping cooler. But, not so good since I’m supposed to sleep in a tent. I might be knocking on Jerry’s door begging to sleep on the floor in his hotel room. Wish me luck folks. This is gonna be a toughie. If you’re up on Saturday night/Sunday morning around 2 am CDT, think of me and hope I’ve managed to roll in, all in one piece, by then.

The ‘WOW’ factor

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 9:54 am

Last night and today have, so far, been full of ‘WOWs’.

This morning, WOW, I ran hills. WOW. It was tough. 7 repeats, 2:00 uphill (3-4% incline), 2:00 back downhill. Plus warm-up and cool-down, around 40 minutes total running. The humidity was killer. I was having a tough time breathing, and my left quad was cramping. WOW. I can’t believe I made it through the workout this morning but I did. Oh, and WOW, I’m running again tonight. My first double. Hope I make it!

Last night was a WOW night too. I’ve been kind of mum on the whole ‘dating thing’ for a while now. Wasn’t much going on anyway. I’ve gotten a few emails from a few different guys (yeah, online dating…), but only one turned into a date. And WOW, I’m glad!

There was a First Date for coffee. Relaxed, enjoyable, interesting, good-looking, funny. Absolutely, I’ll go out with him again.

Second Date involved more effort. Actual planning and forethought took place. We went to see Richard III at the Shakespeare Festival. I packed a picnic dinner and a couple of bottles of wine, and, up until it started lightning, then raining, in the middle of the second act, it was a perfect night. He can quote Shakespeare. He’s polite, well mannered, funny. This is most excellent. WOW.

Third Date was last night. Italian restaurant for dinner, with cheesecake for dessert, then a DVD at my house. (Yes, nosey people, we watched the movie.) We talked for a while, and then I took him home (yeah, I have this ‘thing’ about driving…other people’s driving kind of freaks me out…it’s not an ‘issue’, it’s a ‘thing’). He can carry on an intelligent conversation, has interesting things to say, makes me laugh, is very complimentary (I think I’m getting spoiled on compliments right now…WOW). Again, most excellent.

All I have to say about this guy so far is WOW. So many good things about him. Did I mention good-looking too? I think I did, but I’ll say it again. Oh, and he writes too…mostly poetry. I have two so far. WOW! I haven’t yet found a fatal flaw. Date Four is in the works. Most excellent. WOW.

Stealth Paddling

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 10:38 am

As some of you may know, this Saturday is my next big race. Should be as long, or longer than I’ve gone before, but at about 50 degrees more heat…Saturday is shaping up to be about 98 degrees plus humidity.

Last night I met our new Green Acher, Jerry, out at the Trinity River for some paddling practice. The paddle leg has been the dreaded part of the previous races I’ve done. But, after last night, I’m looking forward to it.

Jerry is a canoe racer. He’s been the C1 class (what exactly that means, I don’t know) champion the last 6 years in the state of Texas. So, we had planned on using a 4 person torpedo canoe, but got concerned about tight creek channels. So, we’re going with a 2-man kevlar canoe (weighs in at 40 pounds), and Darin and Jeff will be in their kayak. We’re also using these ultra-light carbon-fiber paddles. I never thought I would get so jazzed about a canoe paddle, but after using that thing last night, wow. A canoer’s dream.

Jerry gave me some tips on my stroke technique, and once I stopped splashing, started reaching, and pulled the paddle from the water at my hip, I had a noise-less, splash-less, efficient stroke. We were zoomin’. Well, for a canoe. I forgot to time us on our first mile. But, on the way back, I clocked an 11:30 mile. This is gonna be a great race.

Next Race:
July 16 in Mineral Wells.

I woke up in a crappy mood this morning…

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 6:39 am

But, my friend Judy gave me a new rule. On my training days, even if I feel bad, I have to get up and run at least one mile. Then, if I’m still feeling bad, I can go home. But, I absolutely may not pull the covers over my head and go back to sleep. So, at 4:25 am, I woke up, got up, got dressed and headed out to the track. Kids were fighting over who got to sleep in the back seat, and who had to go up to the front. I rolled down the windows, opened up the sunroof, and told them they could fight it out, just not to set off the car alarm while I was running.

After Sunday’s epic 14 mile run and hip pain, I was looking forward to an easy recovery run today. OK, well. It started off easy anyway. I ran 4 miles, 44 minutes, 11 min average total. Pushing through that first mile was the toughest. And then I suddenly started to feel better. I picked up my pace a little, and still felt pretty good. After two miles, I stopped briefly to grab a drink of water, then headed out for mile 3. After mile 3, I knew that I was posting negative splits for each mile, so, just out of curiosity, I pushed a little harder. I was well pleased! Then I stretched some. Off to go stretch some more and take a shower. My final breakdown for today’s run:

Mile 1: 12 minute mile
Mile 2: 11:11 minute mile
Mile 3: 10:49 minute mile
Mile 4: 10 minute mile

So, even though I woke up in a crappy mood, after bustin’ out negative splits for my run today, well, let’s just say I’m feelin’ pretty good. Tuesday is an ass-kickin’ day!

P.S. You know you have a sickness when you can remember your time for each mile…12:00, 23:11, 34:00, 44:00. Jeez…

Poker Night: Redux: Pics

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 10:39 am

So, Friday night was poker night. My friend Steph hosted for the evening. She has a gorgeous house, and is an excellent hostess. I wish I was as ‘Martha Stewart’ as she is…except without the jail time. Oh, that makes it sound like Steph’s been to jail too…but she hasn’t, just Martha.

A little sidenote fact about Steph…she is an excellent gardener. She has a cute little greenhouse in her backyard, and a lovely gazebo. See all the pretty flowers?!

Felicia, Amy, Me, Kim, Christy, Stephanie & Ramona

My friend Christy! She keeps me honest… And Amy, well, I hope to be able to drink as well as she does one of these days! (I LOVE YOU AMY!) (OK, Amy’s not really a lush. I just didn’t manage to get a good picture of her. Amy is super-smart, funny, witty, charming, lovely and SINGLE!)

Steph surprised us with the mixin’s for Lemon Drop Martini’s. They’re addicitve

So she made me a martini…

Or, well, half of one at least… 😉

Now, this is a martini…the glass must be full…if you’re one of those ‘glass half-full kind of people…well, when it comes to martini’s, that’s too bad for you. 🙂

And, because we’re girls…we do better than beer and peanuts. Yep, we have brie, and grapes and crackers. We also had homemade guacamole which was fantastic, and lots of other kinds of cheese too. Like I said…Steph’s Miss Martha Stewart! Very impressive!

Oh, and because we’re girls…we hide our poker money under the toaster.

Whew…the night was over. I didn’t win, but it’s about having a good time! My jacks just didn’t hold up. 😦 Next time…I’ll get ’em next time.

Marathon training, week 7

Filed under: Uncategorized — by InterstellarLass @ 10:51 am

Well, this week certainly started off with a bang. Er, make that a bust. I am sooo tired. 2:50, 14 miles. My furthest, fastest run, and it wasn’t even fast. Dang it was hot, humid, and still. Barely caught a wisp of a breeze on the way back. Made myself run despite my aching hip. Need some Aleve and a shower now.

I do have more pictures from poker night, and from Wednesday night too. I will post those later when I get a bit more time. As for now, I’m off to brunch for some mimosas and a waffle. Yum!
