Ready the Ear Plugs

Filed under: Elle & Zed — by InterstellarLass @ 2:37 pm

I’m going to try to enjoy the relative peace and quiet of my home for the next five days. Elle and Zed return from the Ex Monday evening. Supposedly, Zed’s been doing a lot better at ignoring his sister’s torments. Maybe the tormenting will eventually die down a bit as well.

But starting August 10, I plan to start wearing ear plugs.

Last night Nick and I went to our local musical instrument supply store and signed a rental contract on a Selmer model CL201 B-flat clarinet. Yes. We are destined to be the proud parents of a budding clarinetist. The clarinet has an interesting history. There are many varieties, and it appears to be quite the regional instrument.

We geared up with a music stand, a music book, reeds, a thumb pad – to ensure correct thumb resting, cork grease, a cleaning brush, and other various odds and ends that all fit in a nice case slightly larger than a lunch box. The one thing we forgot though was the ear plugs. Evidently though, the initial squeaking and squawking should give way within a couple of months to a more melodious sound.

I’m just glad he doesn’t play something brass or the drums.

  1. Ah, the sounds of the squeaking clarinet. I played flute but my neighbors daughter was taking clarinet and used to practice on the back porch. YIKES! Like nails on a chalk board!! I love the new place and everything you’ve done with it. Who designed all this?! KIDDING!

  2. Like the new place!

I’ve been living the band mom life all summer! A beginner trumpet and a beginner clarinet! What? Did you say something??

I think this is just payback from my own childhood. Part of it anyway.

  3. This is cool, Lass!

Hey, I played clarinet!! You’ll survive… just make sure he practices in a soundproof room! Mwaaahhhh haaaa haaa!

  4. Strangely enough, I played the clarinet for about a year before I gave up, mainly due to the teasing… 5th graders can be so cruel. RE: moving: I despise moving, even if someone else is doing it for me. Sometimes I think I would rather have my scrotum pulled up over my head than move. And, yes, I am still on the porch, naked.

  5. Great new site! change is good, change is good…

I would buy extra sets of earplugs and maybe a dental guard to keep from grinding your teeth, LOL.
Congrats to Zed tho.. very cool!

  13. Ooh, the clarinet! That sounds like fun 🙂 We’ve got piano players here (or at least piano lesson takers), but I’d love for them to be able to play other instruments, too!
