One Step Closer

Filed under: Elle & Zed,It's Me, Lass — by InterstellarLass @ 8:09 am

My kids continued their sporting streak this weekend. Zed’s team made the playoffs with a 32-14 win on Friday night. Kind of exciting considering that less than five minutes before game-time we had three players and were staring down the face of a forfeit. Our last two kids ran in right at the jump-ball. Zed had a scary little finger-jam on an early rebound attempt, but he fought his way through the rest of the game.

Elle had her first slumber party Friday night. And still, Saturday morning, I picked her up at 7:15 am to get her to soccer. It was a cool freezing at about 8 am. Plus wind. Still, our girls played hard (and bundled up) and won the game. Elle scored two goals in contribution to her teams 10-0 win. It was fun to win, but we’ve been on the other end of that score before too. I also was almost beaned from behind by a soccer ball. A group of crazy men were playing a game behind us. They had these teeny tiny goals about 2 feet wide and 3 feet high. Some of those loonies guys were out there playing in tanks and shorts. I was in a coat, gloves and had a blanket for extra warmth. It was one of their goal attempts that flew by my right ear, barely missing me.

Later, Elle’s basketball team ended their first season with a win – their third in a row – and for a winning record, 4-3-1. This one was a hard game at the end. Going into the 4th quarter we were up 10-2. Then the referees made some calls that resulted in several trips to the line for the other team and the score got run up for the other team. We held the ball at our end for the last 14 seconds to eke out an 11-10 victory. There are no playoffs for her league until next year. That’s OK. I need a X*n*x to make it through her games anyway. There’s too many misses and almosts and oh mans for me.

We have a three week break before our next soccer game. Between bye-weeks, a rescheduled game and spring break, I’m going to be jonesing for a little futbol. Zed’s playoffs will be sometime this week, with some possible week-night games. Do you think I’ll scare the other parents if I paint the team logo on my face?

And, I think I should note here that I know it’s not all about the winning. No matter what, I always tell my kids that they played a good, hard, clean game. Sometimes the other team is just better, sometimes our kids just don’t come together. Elle’s soccer team this weekend played one of their best games. They actually executed like their coach had taught them. They don’t always do this. But when they do, we have great games. Maybe my cheering is a little louder than other moms, but I am very competitive. It’s part of who I am. I love watching my kids play. And I love seeing them succeed. I’m their mom. 🙂
