Maybe I need one of those protective helmets

Filed under: It's Me, Lass — by InterstellarLass @ 9:10 pm

I am not a clutzy person. Twelve years of ballet taught me grace and balance, as well as good posture. But today, you wouldn’t have known it.

First, on my way to a meeting, I walked through our atrium, and then into our main lobby. A group of people had just passed me, and fortunately exited the lobby. Because all of a sudden. SPLAT! There I was on the floor in front of the stair case. Only one person saw me fall. Thank goodness. My shoes flew off, and I landed mostly on my left knee and elbow. My knee has a slight bruise. My elbow actually is a little scraped. I have no clue why I fell. Walking one minute, not the next.

Then, just because if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing twice, I fell again tonight. At Zed’s basketball practice. I had dropped him off and then parked. Just walking through the lobby again and BAM! Down I went. Fortunately I didn’t break the coach’s trophy that I was carrying. The score book did go flying though, as did my water bottle. Sadly the lobby was full of parents and kids alike, but I was up again quickly. A girl picked up the score book and asked if I was OK, and so of course I lied. “I’m fine.”

At first I thought maybe I was fine. But then the outside of my foot hurt. OK, a little bruise. But as the night has worn on, the pain has gotten worse. My foot is throbbing, though not swollen (that I can detect). I’m walking with a limp, and it hurts to move it. Why did I fall? No clue. Didn’t notice any wet spots, objects in my path, and they weren’t ‘dangerous’ shoes. Normal, fully enclosed pumps. I’ve never had any problem wearing them before.

I wonder if I sprained it. Not good. Not good at all. Tonight I’m icing it and elevating and taking Advil. Ya’ll why does crap have to happen to me at just the wrong time! I’m in TRAINING! Karma! Hello?!?! Be nice to me, please. Please, pretty please? Don’t make me have a temper tantrum. It’s not a pretty sight.

If you’re looking for me, I’ll be down here…on the floor…

  1. Oooooh…ouch. Sounds like your having bad karma. Hope it goes away soon.

  2. What’s up (or down?) with that? Just falling? Didn’t trip on something, step on a piece of gum or anything? Embarrassment aside, that’s a little weird. Not meaning that you’re weird, just weird to be falling for no apparent reason – like a possible weird medical thing? Hope not!

  3. OMG! Ouch! And how embarassing!
But when you said “pumps”. I say, “Just say No”. I can’t wear anything except comfortable FLAT shoes.

I have some slip on tennie-shoes that are flat, but they have like a 1 inch thick sole? I am constantly “falling off” them and twisting my ankle. I just use them when I have to go outside for a minute or something. Any heels and me do NOT get along.

  4. Only one person saw me fall. Thank goodness.

That’s always the most important part, for me anyway. I figure everything else will heal, eventually 🙂

  5. Well, I’ve managed to walk into a shop window before and had to explain to people that I was perfectly sober

  6. Lass, you should go to the doc’s and get it checked. You could have a hairline fracture – perhaps the shoes you were wearing put pressure on a weak spot and caused you to lose your balance.

I know that I’ve read about people falling and breaking their hips but that it may be they have the cause and effect reversed – they fall because the hip broke and they lost their support – not the other way around.

Or it could be a combination of the weight issue and your hip flexors spasming. I know since I gained weight my left hip flexor gets cramped sometimes and my knee wants to go out from under me.

Anyway, it is probably nothing, but I’d still get it checked.

  7. Ya know, I don’t want to be the alarmist here, but you might want to consider having a checkup. Maybe something’s going on neurologically.

    Or maybe you’re just a klutz 🙂

  8. Yikes! I’m laughing bit like the comment above me – a little concerned. Maybe you should get that checked. It could be something with your ears (and balance.)
