Walking Fine Here, But Sitting on my Tush…Just in Case

I’ve managed to stay upright since Friday. You’ll all be happy to know that I haven’t taken a spill since the last incident. I appreciate all the concern. I’ll keep an eye on myself. And if I have any more issues, believe me Nick will drag my butt to the doctor quicker than you can blink. I’ve tried to stay off of my feet most of the weekend, except for the part of the day today where I mowed the lawn and trimmed the hedges. And when I cleaned the kitchen. And then my ankle hurt. But my butt was firmly planted on the couch Saturday.

Nick and I watched several movies, including Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House and That Touch of Mink. In both movies I briefly got to see Cary Grant shirtless. The stars of today don’t have anything on Mr. Grant. He was 58 in That Touch of Mink. And in excellent shape. I plan to watch more of his movies. 😉 Then we watched the movie Wonderland. Gruesome, gruesome murders. Of course I’m not all that familar with Mr. Holmes’ work, so, I didn’t really have a vested interest in the film. We watched parts of a couple of other things too, none of which are memorable. Tonight we watched The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio. I really like Julianne Moore. She’s a very good actress I think. And Woody Harrelson was in this too – a completely unsympathetic character I thought. But an inspiring, sad, true story. And, to top it all off, I watched Part I of Empire Falls. I do like Ed Harris and Paul Newman.

What about you? See any good movies this weekend?

My Sweet Baboo

Some of you asked for it, and I also had to correct my statement regarding Nick being the MacGyver of  home-made cardmaking. The correct phrase he used was that he is the MacGyver of Romance. So here is my sweet Valentines card that I got from my sweet Wookiee hubby. Sorry for the crummy quality, but I was having a hard time with glare and focus.

I cried. Because I’m sentimental like that.

Cupid, Draw Back Your Bow

Happy Valentines Day everyone! Granted, it’s a manufactured holiday, but I don’t think it hurts to tell someone you love them. And don’t take for granted that someone does love you and that you mean a lot to them.

I was reminded of that early this morning. Nick took Elle to school early, and I didn’t get to see her before she left. About fifteen minutes after her school started, my cell phone rang. Elle was on the other end in tears. I’m thinking, Uh oh, she’s forgotten/lost/broken her glasses or she left her Valentin(m)es at home or she left her party item at home. She started off:

Elle: Mommy I love you.
Me: I love you too baby. What’s the matter?
Elle: I love you Mommy and I miss you.
Me: I know sweetie. What’s the problem?
Elle: I didn’t get to see you this morning and wish you Happy Valentimes Day.
Me: Oh baby. I know. I got your Valentine and I love you too. Thank you. I want you to have a good day today. Cheer up baby.
Elle: OK Mommy. I love you.
Me: I love you too.

She’s my bundle of energy, my ball of fire, my tough little girl. But she’s also my sweet, sensitive, loving little girl that loves to give hugs and kisses and send sweet ‘notes’ to you and leave them on your pillow. For Valentine’s she’ll get these earrings and bracelet. She’ll have to grow in to the bracelet, but the price was right.

Zed is easier to make happy. A box of size 3 B-flat clarinet reeds ($25 for a box of 10!) and a haircut make him happy as a clam and makes me a “rockin’ mom”. But then buying him Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team for his Valentine gift helps.

Nick got me a dozen red roses. And lest you think he skipped on the romanticism of the day, I also received a t-shirt. But not just any t-shirt. A sexy Wookiee t-shirt. Featuring the other hairy man in my life, Chewbacca. A while back he also burned me a copy of a song called “Chewbacca” by Supernova. Wookiee singing is music to my ears. (Check out a sample of track 9.) Thanks baby for developing my inner nerd. I’ve always known I was a nerd at heart, but was afraid to show it. Now I relish in my nerd-ness. What a wookiee!

Macaroni Salad

Filed under: Interstellar Casa,It's Me, Lass,Married Life,Mr. Wonderful — by InterstellarLass @ 9:57 am

So, if you were cooking dinner and talking on the phone and helping your daughter help you cook dinner, would you notice that the other adult party in the house had gone to the fridge to get a ‘pre-dinner-snack’? And then, during dinner when refilling your drink from the cooler in the fridge, you notice that a certain macaroni salad that you had your eye on is missing. And then you put two and two together and realize that the other adult party ate before dinner, and ate the certain macaroni salad that you had your eye on. Would you be upset that a) the other adult party had eaten before dinner while you were cooking dinner and b) the other adult party had eaten the macaroni salad all gone without saying nary a thing.

Elle has voiced the opinion that she would like to continue to play basketball and soccer at the same time. I’m not sure if I can do three sports schedules. I’ve been pretty adamant before about only playing one sport at a time, but she has fun and I think it’s good for her. So I’m torn.

In other news…I gave my notice at work yesterday. I start a new position at the end of the month. Remember the job I didn’t get? The hiring manager decided that he wanted to work with someone that he’d worked with before. But, the exec that I interviewed with (and who I later found out actually preferred me for the position) liked me so much that he sent my resume over to another manager for another position. I got a call for an interview 4 days after I didn’t get the other job. So, I went in an interviewed, and then ran into the manager at a bookstore that same night (me with no makeup and giant zit and frizzy hair). I had a second interview with a 6-person panel, and then the CIO walked in at the end and asked a couple of questions too. Last Thursday I had to go back to fill out all the paperwork and take the drug screen – where I had to wait in a crowded, smelly clinic for over an hour just to pee in a cup. The role is similar to what I’m doing now, but with a lot more growth potential. It’s a slight lateral step, but with more money and a visible future. Everyone I interviewed with was very energetic and positive about what they do, and the manager has a clear interest in the product and the organization, not just the methodology of the role.

How about you? Anything new going on?

One. One year ago yesterday. I married my love. My Superman. My Nick.

Yesterday we celebrated with brunch, Converse, knives and fried chicken. Eclectic one might say.

Thank you baby, for a wonderful year. For being a wonderful husband. A fantastic pappy. The head of our table. Our strength and our protector. My comforter and help mate. I love you.

What are the chances…

Nick asked last night as he stared at his Sunbutter*.

Nick: What are the chances one of the kids used my Sunbutter after they made a peanut butter sandwich?
Me: Hopefully they know better. I don’t think they’ve been using it though.

Nick proceeds to make his sandwich. He eats it.

Nick: Uh oh.
Me: *sigh* The Benadryl strips are in my purse. And then take two more regular Benadryl.
Nick: I’ve got to get it out of my system too. *goes to bathroom*
Me: Are we going to have a major problem?
Nick: I don’t know yet.

We ended up not having a major problem, but if the kids think they’ll still get presents for Christmas after trying to knock off their step dad, well, they’re sadly mistaken**.

*Nick is allergic to nuts.
** I know it was just an accident, but it could have been a very bad accident and we had a talk this morning. The children will no longer be allowed to use the Sunbutter, and it will be kept far away from their reach.

Thursday Thirteen, ed. xiii

Filed under: Elle & Zed,Family & Friends,Married Life,Mom Life,Mr. Wonderful,Thursday Thirteen — by InterstellarLass @ 12:25 am

Thirteen Things Interstellar Lass Is Thankful for this Thanksgiving

1. My family. On January 1 of this year, Nick and I formed a new family. The transition was a bit choppy at first, but we’ve smoothed out some of the rough edges and we’re humming along beautifully. We are happy!

2. Nick. He is an amazing man. He’s a wonderful step-father. He loves me, supports me, and treats me like I’ve always wanted to be treated. The kids trust, respect, love and appreciate him. We are lucky to have found him.

3. Our house. There is work to be done. We are making it our home. It feels wonderful to have our own home.

4. A healthy year. We didn’t have any major illnesses or health issues this year. That’s a good thing.

5. Smart, happy kids. Elle is doing much better in school this year. She’s really put in a lot of effort to do better. And Zed brought up his grades between the progress report and his last report card. Not quite to where I wanted, but pretty darn close. Elle had a couple of great soccer seasons, and they’re both looking forward to playing basketball this winter.

6. Resources. You know, the resources to make improvements to the house, the resources to let the kids play sports, and the resources to have a little fun along the way.

7. Being a mom. It helps me to have patience, empathy, and sympathy. Being a mom reminds me that taking care of others is a priviledge that has great rewards.

8. Laughter. I think we have a lot of laughter in our house. I think it helps to have a sense of humor.

9. My friends. Getting away with them, playing poker with them, having fun and being girlfriends. They’re all so neat in different ways.

10. Growth. I feel that I’ve grown this year. I’m a lot calmer than I used to be, and I think I’ve done a lot to improve myself and my kids this year. And I’m watching more closely as my kids grow up. I’ve seen them do some awesome things this year, and I’m so proud that they are growing!

11. Ya’ll! I appreciate the support, the affirmation, and the laughter that you all give me, both about my life and yours! I have realized so many times that I’m not the only one that feels a certain way about things, or struggles with certain things. We’re all in the same boat and just doing the best we can.

12. My calendar/planner. I’ve done a good job this year of keeping up with my calendar/planner, and it’s helped me be more organized. I’ve still got lots more to do, but I’m getting there!

13. Thanksgiving. For reminding me to think about all I have to be thankful for.

Demolition Man

Filed under: Interstellar Casa,Mr. Wonderful — by InterstellarLass @ 9:04 am

No, it’s not just another bad movie starring Stallone. While Elle and I were out and about on Saturday morning, Nick and Zed demo’d our shower. He was more than happy to do this, as he got to go to Home Depot, buy a couple of new tools, and whack things really hard.

That ugly arch is coming out. All it does is block light from the shower. Fortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any water damage to the framing studs from the bad tile patch job done some time ago. We will have to replace a little bit of insulation, and we’ve purchased a whole new shower receptor.

See how happy he looks? Why is it guys get so giddy when they get to tear things up?

Just My Luck

Last night, watching the news – and I use the term “news” in the loosest terms – I got hooked by a terrible hook. What’s in your refrigerator that could make you sick!? Oh good grief. Another scare-tactic hook. I usually flip the channel. We have one news station here that is really terrible about the cheeseball dramatic hooks. But for some reason last night I decided to listen. I wish I hadn’t.

Don’t eat packaged spinach! But spinach is my favorite vegetable! I’ve been buying it like crazy lately. And what did I have for dinner last night? A spinach and shrimp salad from Applebee’s! And I’m sure they used packaged spinach. Nick picked Applebee’s. It’s not on my list of places to eat. How long does it take for E. Coli to attack?

Hey…I wonder if he knew about this and was just trying to off me? Hmmm…

Nick the Pirate

Filed under: Mr. Wonderful — by InterstellarLass @ 11:48 pm

To quote him: “Aargh.” He’s kind of a half-ass pirate. I can’t believe only Carnealian saw it! One more chance. Look…what do you see?

Still don’t see it? Maybe you need a close-up… (more…)
