Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. It has warmed up nicely this week. Highs have been in the 60’s and 70’s. A nice change from the cold temps we were having.

2. I went to a happy hour last night for another co-worker that is leaving. I have a tiny headache.

3. Zed is getting good in the kitchen. On Tuesday night I taught him how to cut a tomato. Both slices and diced.

4. Both kids love to help me cook. I’m doing better at being more patient and giving them more to do.

5. I start my new job on Monday! I’m both excited and nervous.

6. I’m a little bit sad to be leaving some of my friends here. I was thinking about it on the way in to work yesterday. I almost cried. I probably will cry tomorrow.

7. I haven’t cleaned enough off my desk. I need to get on that today. Lots of papers to file away.

8. I joined a knitting group that meets locally. Then I found out that the organizer has been AWOL for the last two months. So I started my own group! And people are joining!

9. I haven’t led a group of anything in a couple of years. The last time I did, I was President of a young professionals group. We did a couple of fund raisers, and there were two of us that ended up doing all the work. It was fun, but exhausting. I think a knitting group is more low-key.

10. I get nervous about meeting new people sometimes, but I know this should be fun. I’m always afraid that there will be a mean person or a total whacko that makes it not fun for everyone else. Knitting needles can be sharp! And the scissors…if you hear of a knitting accident in the news, you’ll know it didn’t go well for me.

11. Neither kid has a game this weekend! What am I going to do?!? No soccer?!? No basketball?!? Boo Hoo! 😦

12. Last weekend I got a baby fix. Everyone seems to be having babies lately, and I’m the tiniest bit sad that I’m not. But we got to visit some friends, and I got to hold a little two-week old baby for most of the afternoon. She slept the whole time. It was so sweet to get to cuddle her!

13. Nick will read the statement above, and then IM me and tell me not to start the wishful thinking again. He’s such a spoil sport.

Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. If you’ve never received a home made Valentine’s card, you are missing out.

2. Colored file folders: 12 cents each; Glue Stick: $1.09; office scissors: free; Sharpie: $1.25; Making your wife burst into tears from the sheer sweetness of the sentiment: Priceless

3. Nick is now the self-proclaimed MacGyver of home made card-making.

4. We got to enjoy a nice quiet dinner last night, then stopped for coffee. It was a good date.

5. Can you say “Damn it’s cold outside?” Alright, all together now: “Damn it’s cold outside!

6. It was snowing this morning. Our fifth snow event in Texas this winter. This is unheard of people.

7. Today’s snow is just the baby dust in the air. It is not turning into eleventy billion feet of snow like in other places, so I’ll just shut up now.

8. Wrigley’s butt was especially offensive last night. She’s probably just upset that she didn’t get a Valentine. She got extra treats though. She was passed out right under my feet, and I had to sit with my shirt over my nose to avoid dying of toxic poisoning. For some reason Nick insisted he didn’t smell it. Hmmm…

9. The whole family is expected at Zed’s band concert tonight. I wonder if he’s nervous.

10. Tomorrow night is Zed’s last basketball game. We’re not sure if his coach is coming back due to his work schedule. Zed will be very bummed if he has to switch teams because this guy is a great coach and Zed really wants to play for him again.

11. Elle is going to her first slumber party tomorrow night. I hope that goes well. And that they don’t go to bed too late because she has to be at a soccer game at 7:45 am. That’s just wrong on all levels.

12. I have a whole list of doctor appts I need to make before my last day. I have a 30-day waiting period for benefits at my new job. I think that’s wrong, but what can you do.

13. Anyone know how to get a recording off of a DVR (not a Tivo)? One of our local news anchors did something that just has to be shared, and the video isn’t on the local news site.

14. *Bonus. Here ya go MommaK…a view of where I am.

Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. I’m a little frustrated. There are several bl*gs that I’ve tried to post comments on, but for some reason they’re not posting. Grr.

2. I’m glad I’m not the only one with a headband problem. See item #2. I invested in some more metal flex-clips and will have to rely on the good ‘ol scrunchie and then clip back all the shorties and fly-aways.

3. Zed has a band concert next week. He’s very excited about it. I’m excited to see him play with the full ensemble! Note to self: He needs size 3 reeds.

4. Tuesday night he had an Open House. There wasn’t as much ‘stuff’ to see in the rooms, so I was a little bit disappointed. But then there was a student/faculty basketball game and that was exciting to watch. I’m glad Zed and I were able to enjoy it together.

5. For the next two weekends Elle will have soccer and basketball, and Zed will have basketball still. Three games per weekend. I’m building up my cheer reserves.

6. I’ve decided what tattoo I’m going to get, and I’ve decided where I’m going to get it. Now I just have to get up the guts to go do it.

7. When I met Nick, he was solidly anti-tattoo and piercings. Now he’s shaved his head, gotten both ears pierced, and has four tattoos on his ‘list’ that he wants to get. I don’t like two of them and I’m trying to talk him out of getting them.

8. I’m a sloth. I haven’t been to the gym this week. Last night I was all set to go, and then I just had this huge wave of tiredness wash over me and I went home and took a nap instead.

9. Tuesday night Zed decided he had his first facial hair. He has dark toe hair, his legs are starting to look hairier, and a couple of weeks ago he announced that he has ‘hair down there’. And as much as I searched and squinted, I couldn’t make out the mystery ‘facial hair’. I’m not ready for this.

10. But I do hope he hits puberty soon. He really wants to play basketball next year at school, and he needs to grow and put on some muscle to do it. He’s still kind of soft and boy-ish. And the kids playing in the student/faculty game were decidedly not boyish.

11. Elle is growing up every day too. I can still carry her when she falls asleep, but she’s getting better at doing her own hair, and I really see her developing a ‘style’ of her own. I think she’s going to be kind of punk.

12. I’m doing better at getting more sleep. I was in bed last night by 10:30. I didn’t fall asleep till after 11, but I’m making an effort.

13. I had fun remembering and writing about my cars. Won’t you stay a bit longer and read about them and then remember yours?

Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. I’m starting to feel like a Superbowl. XXIII. The 49’ers won that year I think.

2. I think I must have a funky shaped-head or something. Goody has these things called ‘Stay Put’ bands. They’re supposed to be great for working out and ‘will stay secure no matter what you do’. I bought the Flat Headbands, and I put them on, and then they zing right off the back of my head. I also tried a Striped Silk Headband that has an elastic connector around the bottom. Also won’t stay on my head. Is there a trick to it? Am I doing something wrong? Am I deformed?

3. I’m having a bad hair day. I worked out last night, then went home and showered and dried my hair before Nick and I went to dinner. Usually my hair would look fine the next day with a little brushing and a little leave-in conditioner. Not today.

4. Scenario: A Woman has a meeting with a Person about an opportunity. Woman leaves with very positive feeling. Later, after shower and dinner, Woman and Husband go to book store to read and knit. While looking for good spot to sit, Woman encounters Person she met with earlier in the day. Woman has on no makeup, bad hairdo, slouchy clothes and a huge zit on her chin. Woman introduces Person to Husband. Person informs Woman everything is moving forward in regards to opportunity. Woman is happy yet mortified at appearance. Awkwardness ensues.

5. I also think I’m dehydrated. I’m working on a 24oz bottle of Ozarka right now to hopefully rememdy that issue.

6. Last night I started knitting again. The Cigar gloves I’m working on for Nick. I have projects I need to get d.o.n.e.

7. My mom also wants another pair of the Fetching gloves I made her for Christmas. The first pair were in chocolate brown. She wants a pair in black. And my sister wants a pair in blue.

8. I also have the yarn for this bolero for myself. And the Mabel dress for a friend’s baby. That book has so many lovely things to knit for babies. Anyone have an extra pair of hands I can borrow?

9. Zed got all his progress reports home this week. He’s doing very well. All A’s!

10. Elle is doing well also. Our school doesn’t give ‘grades’ for kids until they’re in 3rd grade, but she’s doing much better now with her glasses. Her reading and writing test scores have improved dramatically, and her math scores have come up too. She is in math tutoring to boost her scores some more. I’m very proud of how hard she’s working.

11. I learned of Elle’s progress from a parent/teacher conference I had two weeks ago with her teacher. I attend all requested conferences, and have requested several extra conferences for both of my kids. But I think this is just dumb. A bill is before the Texas congress to fine parents that do not attend parent/teacher conferences. Don’t get me wrong. I think parents should take an active stance in their child’s education. And it’s awful that people pass their kids off to the school and expect the school to do all the work. But I don’t think a Class C misdemenor and a $500 fine is in order. Making a parent a criminal is going to increase their involvment in their child’s schooling? I think not. This solution is impractical from an administrative standpoint and puts an even larger burden on courts, teachers, schools, and state financing. Back to the drawing board.

12. Tomorrow night my friends and I are having a ‘slumber party’ for two of my friends’ birtdays. Yes. A slumber party. Nick raised his eyebrows when I informed him. Go ahead guys. Imagine it. Girls in skimpy pajamas, having pillowfights, giggling and jumping on the bed. *BOOM* That was reality smacking you upside the head. Sorry, doesn’t happen. We’ll go to a happy hour, hang out in the hot tub, watch chick-flicks and snack ourselves silly.

13. Happiness is a pulled pork sandwich and bbq sauce with a side of really good potato salad. Don’t you think?

Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. Heroes came back on this week! Yay! I’ve been missing it! Now the story can continue. Have you watched too?

2. It’s warmed back up here in Texas. Nice and cool in the 40s and low 50s. Makes me want to take a long walk.

3. Elle had to spend three days at school without her glasses…she left them at her dad’s house. She didn’t bother to tell me until Tuesday evening.

4. I have four knitting projects, sitting, begging to either be finished or started. I think I got a little burnout after Christmas. But I’m about ready to get them started again.

5. My hip/backside is starting to feel a bit better. It was still rather sore yesterday. Like I got a shot in by backside. I think I might go to yoga tonight and stretch it.

6. My flowerbeds seem to be OK. My pansies appear to have survived The Great Freeze. Some of my bulbs had already started to sprout before the freeze. I wonder if my tulips will poke through before Easter.

7. Last night Nick and I went to dinner. The food was pretty good, but the service was horrible. This kid ignored us as much as possible. I typically like my cappucino with my dessert, not after. Don’t you?

8. We were going to see The Painted Veil, but ended up missing the start due to the slow service, so we walked around the shopping/restaurant area we were in.

9. We heard music coming from a place across the street, so we went to check it out. The place is called Martini Park! Sounded like my kind of place at first, but we spotted four bouncers with earpieces and microphones, and two hostesses that were hasseling a non-fabulous looking lady in jeans and we looked at each other and said “uh uh”. We don’t do pretentious.

10. So we walked around a bit, puffed on some cigars we’d picked up in a very nice cigar shop around the corner. I had a nice little baby vanilla flavored cigarillo.

11. On the way home we spotted a place that’s opened up near our house. It used to be a Burger King if that tells you anything. They had a shuffleboard table, 2 pool tables, and lots of seating space. The guy had a good selection of beers on draught, but couldn’t sell any…still waiting for the liquor license. I was bummed but accepted a ‘free’ Bud Light to be polite.

12. Over the weekend I was making a martini, and my new shaker broke. It was glass, and evidently not very good glass. I put ice in and it broke right through the side. So, we bought a metal one.

13. I love my sweetie. He’s such a good sweetie. I hope I tell him enough. I love you Nick baby.

Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. I need new tires.

2. Even with the slightest amount of iciniess on the road, I was sliding all over the road on Monday.

3. So yesterday when we had ‘snow’, Nick wouldn’t let me drive.

4. So I didn’t go to my gym classes last night. Shame on me.

5. Since late last Saturday, I don’t think the temperature has been above 33 or 34 here. This is not normal. I love it.

6. I hope my flowerbeds survive. I think my poor pansies are going to be toast though. They’ve bounced back after a day or two of ice/cold, but not 5 days of it.

7. I’m super anxious. I’ve got something in the hopper I haven’t talked about, and am waiting to hear.

8. We watched two movies yesterday. Bright Young Things and Starting Over. They were both pretty good.

9. At the end of Starting Over, we saw the name ‘Kevin Bacon’ in the credits. I confirmed on IMDB that it was indeed him. Nick and I then spent the next 15 minutes scanning through the film to finally spot him. The guy really has been in everything.

10. This weekend (if the weather holds), Nick and I are going to see the Body Worlds exhibit. I know this has been quite controversial in the news, but I think it will be fascinating. I’m sure photos won’t be allowed, but I’ll do my best to report back.

11. Next week Heroes starts back up. I’m super jazzed. This has been such a good show with a great story.

12. I made my hotel reservations this week for NYC. You’d think I’d be jumping the gun, but no, there was a lot that had no availability for that weekend. I found something in the Chelsea area for a very good price.

13. I put my new martini shaker too good use last night. Amen for martinis.

Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. I went to the gym last night. 1 hour of Cardio, Butts & Guts, followed by 1 hour of PiYo. Ouch.

2. Immediately after, I felt OK. But once I got home I felt worn down and exhausted. I need to be paying more attention to my resolution to get more sleep.

3. I’ve made hotel reservations for my NYC marathon stay in November. But someone I work with that’s from there said it’s not in a good area. I’ve looked at other hotels and they are so damn expensive! I’m going to hold on to this reservation for now and keep looking around.

4. This weekend we’re going to finish taking down the Christmas lights outside. There’s not enough daylight to do it after work, and we were out of town last weekend. Good-bye Christmas, see you in 11 months.

5. One of my friends is having a birthday tomorrow. I’m going to go out to dinner with her, her sister, and another friend. It should be fun because I haven’t been out with her in a while.

6. Nick’s dad Ed has a friend, Duke. The two of them have been friends for 70 years. Nick and his brother both took their dad to see Duke when they each visisted back in December. Between when Bubba was there and when Nick’s sister went to see their dad, Duke fell. He went to the hospital and got sent home, only to return after 24 hours. He’s been in the hospital since then.

7. On Tuesday, we heard the prognosis wasn’t good for Duke. Nick’s sister works in hospitals, and she didn’t think that Duke would leave. Yesterday we got an email saying that Duke had gotten out of bed twice and sat in a chair two hours each time. This was such good news.

8. Nick’s dad doesn’t have any immediate family in El Paso anymore. His sister-in-law Flo (yes, she’s Aunt Flo) and Duke both live in Las Cruces, which is an hour away. Flo has been ill lately too with heart trouble. After the sad visit to Duke over the weekend, Nick’s dad alluded to the fact that if the two of them passed, he wouldn’t be far behind.

9. This greatly upset Nick. It wasn’t until his mother passed three years ago that Nick and his dad really were able to have a relationship. Being closer to his dad has been something Nick has treasured, and hearing that his dad may be getting the mentality of ‘I’ve lived long enough’ is very hard for him to hear.

10. I’m not much of a ‘pray-er’ but if you have a moment, please pray in any way you want for all three of these wonderful, treasured family and friends.

11. Tonight I’m going to have both kids make cards for Nick’s dad. Mail and email are the only forms of communication for him, due to his deafness. I’m going to make it a point to send him two cards every week since he likes getting mail so much.

12. Switching gears now, someone sent me an email this morning with a link to this. Three guys running 400 miles across the Sahara desert. Amazing. What I really want to know is how the heck do these guys get that much vacation?!?

13. Tomorrow is my two-year bloggiversary. Two years of me. How have you all been able to stand it!?

Thirteen Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. Perusing the news last night on CNN, I saw this story. Interesting with all the stuff going down around Katrina, someone managed to quickly find the specialized resources to rescue tanks of embryos. Good for this family though.

2. I’ve made it to the gym three times this week. If the week counts starting Sunday. I did a 2 hour workout Sunday (jump start on my resolution!), a lot of walking on Monday, a quick 40 minutes Tuesday, and 2 hours last night.

3. Last night was Cardio, Butts and Guts, which totally kicked my ass. Then I followed up with PiYo (pilates/yoga) for stretching and additional core work. Now I hurt today. Ouch.

4. We also took down the Christmas tree last night. I don’t think I missed any ornaments. MORT is out on the curb now, waiting to be picked up for recycling. All the ornaments are packed away. Now Nick just has to take them out to the garage. He’ll get that done quickly though, because it means he can put his chair back.

5. I was really proud of my Christmas dinner. Everything turned out really well. There were no major disappointments with how anything turned out, and I even made my first rissotto and my first roll cake.

6. This weekend Nick and I are going to Austin for his niece’s wedding. She’s getting married in a small outdoor chapel. Pray for good weather!

7. We’ll get to spend some family time, but we’ll also have some ‘us’ time. AND we’re staying at the hotel next to the official ‘wedding party’ hotel, so we can hang out, but can escape when we’re ready!

8. Zed and Elle started back to school today. When telling him to prepare his stuff for school, I reminded Zed that he needed his gym clothes. Then he reminded me that he doesn’t have gym this semester. He has some Explorer program. He doesn’t know what it is and neither do I, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have anything to do with physical activity. Good thing he’s coming to the gym with me, otherwise he would be getting next to no exercise.

9. I’m also curious about their school lunches. Zed says they don’t have vegetables very often. It may just be him though. I checked out the school menu on the district web site and this is what’s listed:

Monday: Hamburger/Cheeseburger, Teriyaki Bowl, Chicken Nuggets w/Roll, Caesar Salad w/Deli Wrap. Tuesday: Hamburger/Cheeseburger, Crispito w/Cheese Sauce, Nacho Grande, Petite Salad w/Baked Potato. Wednesday: Hamburger/Cheeseburger, Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Popcorn Chicken w/Roll, Tuna Chef Salad. Thursday: Hamburger/Cheeseburger, Lasagna w/Wheat Breadstick, Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Yogurt Fruit Plate. Friday: Hamburger/Cheeseburger, Cheese/Pepperoni Pizza, Fish on Bun, Chicken Strip Salad.
Students must select one entree, and may select up to three sides; fruits, veggies and bread.

Doesn’t sound very nutritious or appetizing to me. Breaded, breaded, breaded. And what the hell is a Crispito?

10. In ironic news today, Nick and I had to reschedule our chiropractor appointments because our chiropractor threw out his back.

11. I’m considering looking into acupunture to help with my sciatic. Has anyone ever done acupunture before? Did it seem to help?

12. Tuesday night we encountered another plumbing debacle. After Zed’s shower, the tub wouldn’t drain and neither toilet would flush. A good 20 minutes of plunging, and two hours after a bottle of liquid plumber later, and we were finally able to flush twice before it stopped up again. We then dug around and found a bottle of something highly toxic and caustic that the Rotorooter men had left after a service last year. It worked it’s magic overnight. The toilet still wouldn’t flush, but the shower drained, so I was showering. Then during the shower I heard the toilet magically empty, and things have been fine since. This is good because I’m ass-deep in other projects around the house and I don’t need to add another one to the list!

13. It seems like things have been breaking, one after the other, around the house. The Saturday before Christmas it was the disposal. Thankfully Nick was able to install a new one. Now the plumbing (again!). I’m starting to become very frustrated. I’m wondering if our best bet would be to fix up what we can and then sell the house at the first of next year and move. It’ll have good equity. Must think on this plan.

Thirteen Resolutions for Interstellar Lass in 2007
I don’t normally do resolutions, but if I did, this is what they’d be.

1. Exercise. Ha ha. Yeah. No really. Seriously. I’m running (slooooowly) again, and NYC is an absolute this year.

2. Diet. Well, not so much diet, but eat better. I guess the mushroom risotto that I made for Christmas wasn’t quite the start, but damn, it was good.

3. Take my kids on vacation. We’ve never taken a ‘family’ vacation where we go somewhere other than family reunions or events. Zed is really pushing to visit Metropolis. I’m pretty sure Nick won’t have a problem with that.

4. Make a budget and stick to it. I’m good at making one. Just the sticking to it part is hard when I pass by a pretty pair of shoes.

5. See more movies. I’ve been to more movies in the past 2 months (especially the last 2 weeks!) than I have in over a year. Don’t worry, there’s an entertainment line item in the budget.

6. Finish reading that newbie email from Flylady. My office needs help.

7. Finish Start my wedding album. I have the album. I have papers, stickers, and the photos. On disk. Yeah, I only got married a year ago (on Monday). I did send out thank-you notes already.

8. Not procrastinate so much. She says as she looks at the Christmas cards she still hasn’t mailed out. Never fails. Good thing they said Happy New Year too.

9. Read more. I’m not sure I finished a book this year. I started a couple. I bought two new books last night. They’re by the bed.

10. Continue keeping up with my planner. I’ve done a good job this year. Didn’t lose it. I’ve had my 2007 planner for a couple of months, and I’ve already got appointments in it!

11. Take better care of my skin. I still get carded when I buy beer. I want to continue to do so for a few more years.

12. Get more sleep. She says at 12:15 am. Resolutions don’t really start till Jan 1 though, right?

13. Oh just one more! What will it be!?!? Hug and kiss my kids and my husband every day. That’s an easy one! My favorite thing!

Thursday Thirteen, ed. xvii

Thirteen Random-Stream-of-Concious Thoughts from InterstellarLass

1. Last night Nick and I went to see Rocky Balboa. I wasn’t sure what I was going to think of it, but I ended up loving it. Other than Sly’s pencilled-in/sewn-on right eyebrow, this film was 100% perfect in my opinion. I even bawled like a baby through the entire fight scene. And a couple of other places too.

2. Like the closing credits. Showed regular everyday Joes and Janes, running up the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Admittedly I am a giant nerd. This kind of kitsch appeals to me, and to run up those stairs myself is on my list of things to do before I die. I need to start this list actually…

3. Yesterday, we got our Christmas gift from Nick’s sister. Some very pretty Santa coasters, two top-quality champagne glasses – they make this beautiful bell sound when you bump them – and a generous gift that brought me to tears. I’m not used to that kind of generosity.

4. Last night I found out my cousin is going out of town for Christmas, so that’s three off my list. Makes me a bit sad because I was looking forward to seeing her, but gives us a bit more breathing room.

5. Yesterday I distributed the list of “things to bring” to everyone, and she was assigned wine. THE most important job! I’ll have to give a specific list to my sister now. In my family, people like to drink wine, but I’m the only one that pays attention to what’s on the actual label. I don’t want to end up with a box of Franzia. Sorry if you like Franzia…

6. I need to place my meat order for the beef dish. I think I’m going to order from the local butcher that happens to be right down the street from me. Their price is decent, and I think it’ll be fresher and a better cut than the grocery store.

7. All the to-do’s on my Christmas-gift-list are slowly but surely getting crossed off. Anyone that’s already all done…bleh. Where’s the fun and excitement in that? I mean, yesterday I just got a 50% off on Christmas Eve only coupon from Michael’s. Can you imagine what a zoo that will be? I’ve got to pre-shop so I know what it will be that I want to get!

8. Over the weekend I took the kids to see Eragon. It could have been such a good movie, but it just missed the mark somewhere along the way. It wasn’t cohesive and seemed to jump from one scene to another. The special effects were pretty cool, but there wasn’t enough of something to make it really good. Of course my 11-year old loved it, and he’s getting both books and the soundtrack for Christmas.

9. The other movie that I’ve seen recently was Casino Royale. We saw that over Thanksiving while we were up in Kansas City. Um, whoever said that a blonde Bond is a bad thing? Yeah. They were so wrong. Daniel Craig is perfect in this role. Gets back to the real Bond. See it. Love it. Drool.

10. Some friends of mine were supposed to go on a family ski trip to Keystone. Yesterday, their flight into Co. Springs was cancelled due to the blizzard. So they rented a car and are driving up. I hope that they’ll make it through safely.

11. Our weather forecast for Christmas Day is a low of 29 and a high of 51. That’s not too bad for Texas. Makes it seem semi-Christmassy weather-wise. Maybe we’ll be able to have a fire in the fireplace Christmas morning.

12. Our plan this year is to have a little bit of quiet family-time with just me, Nick and the kids in the morning. My family won’t come over for dinner until later in the day. Oooh! This just reminded me! I need stocking stuffers! Makes note on list.

13. I hope you all have very Merry Christmasses, Happy Hanukkah’s, Happy Festivuses, and wonderful times with your family and friends. May your gravies not be lumpy, may there be plenty of wine, may the boxes not be more played-with than the toys that came in them, and may your hearts be filled with love!
